The Importance of Early Detection And Breast MRI’s, breasting MRI, women's imaging

During the month of October, spreading breast cancer awareness is of utmost importance.  We encourage you to undergo your annual mammogram and be proactive about your breast health. While mammograms and ultrasounds are both effective breast imaging tests, MRI’s play an important role in screening for breast cancer. Let’s take a closer look at how our favorite imaging test is used to fight breast cancer.

Breast MRI Screening

With breast cancer being the second most frequent type of cancer among women, diagnosing the cancer is early to successfully fighting the disease. MRI screenings have shown to be most effective for catching breast cancer early when compared to mammograms.

Traditionally, breast MRI’s are used to screen high-risk women or those with dense breasts. Only recently have doctors began to rely upon breast MRI’s as the preferred tool for breast cancer screenings.

A recent study focused on using MRI’s as a screening tool for women at low risk for breast cancer. The study showed that MRI alone identified 60 of the 61 cases of breast cancer without the assistance of mammography. The findings showed that MRI’s were more accurate in relation to traditional mammograms.

MRI Technology

Breast MRI’s use magnetic fields to create images of the breast and spot any irregularities like lumps or cancerous cells. With the use of contrast agents before the procedure, breast MRI’s are slightly more invasive than mammograms which allows them to get the most accurate results.

Who Should Get A Breast MRI

While breast MRI’s have proven to be effective for all women, mammograms are usually suggested in general. Breast MRI screenings are suggested for high-risk women with family history, dense breasts, or a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation. If you’re unsure whether or not you should undergo a breast MRI, consult with your doctor.
