Achieving a healthier world starts with the children. A balanced diet encourages good habits for now and the future. Plus, they’re still developing! Everyone knows fruits and vegetables are good for you, but people sometimes underestimate the power of whole grains.
Children should be eating close to 3 ounces of fiber-rich foods a day:

In addition to their five servings of fruit and vegetables.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s MyPlate says fruits and vegetables should about for half of the child’s daily food consumption.
Most people think throwing an apple in a lunchbox and giving a side of broccoli is enough, but, while it’s a good start, it’s not enough.
The servings should even increase as the child starts puberty. Boys should have nine servings of fruits and vegetables and girls should have seven.

This applies to a lot of drinks, cereals, snacks, and fast foods.
Nebraska Health has 11 great tips to easily keep your kids healthy:
- Keep nutritious foods, drinks, and snacks in the house (fresh fruit, smoothies, oatmeal cookies, lightly salted popcorn, low-sugar cereal, frozen fruit bars)
- Keep portions small (break bars in half, dilute juices with water, use small bowls for cereal and small cups for soda)
- Avoid aisles with candy and snacks when shopping with kids
- Do not use sweets as a rewards or comfort
- Invite your children to cook with you, make it fun
- Discourage kids from eating in front of the TV or in the bedroom
- Offer milk or water instead of sugary drinks
- The whole family must participate in healthy choices
- Be patient
- Speak up - Tell your children when they're being unhealthy and why it's unhealthy
- Eat a healthy breakfast every morning
While often times patients can’t help it when they need an imaging procedure, whether it be for regular exams or an injury, what we can do is be sure that our children are eating healthy and living active lifestyles. By teaching them the value or a nutritional life early on, will help down the line.
